Australian Topaz - Moon Gems - 18.14ct
This is the very first gem cut in my new design called Moon Gem.
It is a flawless natural silvery white topaz from O'Briens Creek that I personally hand dug from my time fossicking in the area. This design is something that I have had in mind for quite a while and I have always known that topaz would be perfect for it. You see, topaz has this extra brightness to it that a lot of other stones just don't have. I knew the design would captureand hold the light creating a wonderful silvery glow, just like a full moon.
The pics don't really show this effect well but in the hand, my goodness it is stunning. There is one pic of the two moon gems and some topaz rough on a white tray, you can see the topaz moon gem glowing with a silvery light. I have in mind some jewellery designs for rings and pendants that will really show off this radiant silvery brilliance so stay tuned for those. The pavilion dome is frosted which helps capture and diffuse the light while the crown dome is recessed and polished. The crown rim is also frosted which gives some contrast to the polished dome. Overall the effect is everything I hoped for!
With this design I was striving to bring together a balance of simplicity and complexity, of textures - polished and frosted, and to make an object which, whilst appearing very simple on the surface, was actually quite technically challenging to achieve. I believe the Japanese word, shibui encapsulates this philosophy.
