London Blue Topaz - Rhapsody (for a Pharaoh) - Square Radiant - 12.06ct
London blue topaz is a intensely hued gemstone with a distinctive teal blue colour. The pictures unfortunately do not capture the colour accurately, my camera sometimes has trouble rendering certain gemstones and their colours. Some gems are really hard to photograph and London blue topaz is one of them. Anyway, if you are familiar with London blue topaz and it’s teal blue hues than expect more of that with this gem.
The design is a new one. I had this piece of topaz for quite a while and I knew it would be perfect for a square design in a large size however I wanted something a bit special for it. I also wanted a design to suit a square a Pharaoh’s eye sapphire. Pharaoh’s eye is a term used to describe a particular colour zone patterning where the yellow colour zone is positioned in the tip of the pavilion culet and is surrounded by the blue or green/blue colour zones. This creates the effect of a bright yellow iris and when done well, they can look like a yellow laser point of light. Very distinctive! These sapphires are usually cut as an oval contributing to the whole eye effect. Pharaoh’s eye sapphires are highly sort after and collectable and each unique.
So, long story short, I wanted a square design for those cases where an oval wasn’t an option but there was still potential for a Pharaoh’s eye and I wanted to cut this topaz rough Good excuse to combine the two things and I think it achieved the desired results.
